A powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain lashed Delhi overnight, severely impacting the city’s power infrastructure and causing widespread outages. The India Meteorological Department recorded wind speeds reaching 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rainfall between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am. Uprooted trees and waterlogging worsened the situation across many neighborhoods.
Power supply was disrupted in large parts of the capital, particularly in north and west Delhi. Areas such as Bawana, Rohini, Pitampura, Sultanpuri, Chhatarpur, and Model Town reported blackouts. Discoms including Tata Power and BSES cited damage to poles and electric lines due to falling trees and waterlogging. Quick response teams were deployed overnight, with emergency crews working round-the-clock to restore services.
The storm also affected flight operations, uprooted electricity poles, and caused massive waterlogging in several areas. While power was restored in most regions quickly, discom officials said certain pockets took longer due to water accumulation and infrastructure damage. Civic agencies were roped in for tree removal to speed up restoration efforts.
